Medal chance coming up for Kimberley Woods

GB's Woods goes in the final of the women's kayak slalom, which starts at 4.45pm, after negotiating the course third-fastest in the semis.

She's 10th on the start list at the at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.

Britain stay in pole position for eventing gold

Tom McEwen, Laura Collett and Ros Canter have stayed top of the team Eventing leaderboard after today's cross-country event at Chateau de Versailles.

They were already first after the dressage yesterday and will attempt to finish things off tomorrow in the showjumping.

Collett is also in silver medal spot in the individual standings, picking up just a 0.8 penalty for a time fault today, and lies behind Germany's Michael Jung.

"It was amazing," said the Cheltenham rider.

"The crowds out there were unbelievable from start to finish, it was such a buzz. London is my horse of a lifetime, he is just incredible."

McEwen stays sixth after a clear run on Sunday, and Canter 24th.

However, Team GB are appealing Canter's 15 penalties and if successful she would climb to fifth overall.

Dan Evans wins - but Katie Boulter goes out

Team GB's Dan Evans has beaten Moez Echargui from Tunisia 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, taking the match in the deciding set.

He'll be playing with Sir Andy Murray later in the first round of the doubles - a loss would mean the end of the Scot's career as he's said this is his last ever pro tournament.

They're last on court today against a Japanese pairing and probably won't be up for another couple of hours.

Jack Draper also came through the first round relatively easily earlier, beating Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-4.

However it was heartbreak for Britain's Katie Boulter, our only player in the women's singles, who lost 6-4-6-2 against Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

She'll get another go at a medal though, as she's partnering Heather Watson in the doubles.

Boxer suspended after failing doping test

A Nigerian boxer has been kicked out of the Paris Olympics after being provisionally suspended for failing a drugs test.

Cynthia Ogunsemilore was due to fight tomorrow, but the 22-year-old African Games lightweight champion tested positive for the diuretic furosemide in a sample taken on Thursday.

Furosemide is a masking agent that can hide the presence of other drugs.

She has the right to challenge the ban and request her "b-sample" be analysed.

It's understood she was told yesterday about the result of the test.

"The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended until the resolution of the matter in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules," the International Testing Agency said.

Ogunsemilore won the African Games title in her weight class last year and took bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

It is the second positive doping test announced at the Paris Olympics. Iraqi judoka Sajjad Sehen tested positive for two anabolic steroids, the ITA said Friday.

Is Simone Biles injured?

She may have dominated qualifying alongside the US women's gymnastics team today, but limping, strapping and medical treatment suggests Simone Biles may be injured - raising concerns for fans of the consensus greatest of all time gymnast.

Biles was seen limping on her left leg with strapping on her ankle, while her coach said she was suffering from a calf issue after the session.

Cecile Landi said only that Biles' injury was minor and that it had been bothering her for a couple of weeks.

Crucially, there was no discussion of sidelining the seven-time Olympic medallist.

Biles appeared to tweak the leg while warming up for the floor exercise, leaving with Team USA doctor Marcia Faustin in what was an eerily similar scene to what played out in Tokyo - when Biles dropped out of the team competition to protect her safety.

Her apparent physical difficulties did not hold her back however, as she earned the highest score on floor and vault through two subdivisions.

She was seen to limit the difficulty of her uneven bars routine, skipping a unique skill she submitted to the International Gymnastics Federation on Friday.

Instead, she did her usual set to score a 14.333, then tried to keep from putting too much weight on her leg following her dismount.

She's next expected to compete on Tuesday in the team final, before some individual events later next week.

Biles has said she won't be checking X during the Olympics to avoid any negative online chatter. However, she told NBC News she would still be using Instagram and TikTok.

"Insta is good. It’s a good way to connect," she said. "It’s a way to share what we’re going through. And TikTok. I’ve tried to make a little more TikToks, I’m not the greatest at that. I’m learning."

Mountain biking taking place at highest point in Paris

Today's mountain biking event is under way, with the women taking part competing for one of 13 gold medals up for grabs on day two of Paris 2024.

They're racing around a course on Elancourt Hill - the highest point in the Paris region at 231m above sea level.

It's renowned for its outstanding views, and organisers have taken care to ensure minimum disruption to the environment.

95% of the trails for the Olympic mountain bike events - which were designed by South African expert Nick Floros - are based on existing (but man-made) paths, according to Paris 2024.

The courses will remain after the Olympics for public use.

Athletes received the course with mixed reactions, with some expressing concerns about loose gravel on the entirely man-made track.

How close are we to gender parity at the Olympics?

By Rob Harris, sports correspondent

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has today been celebrating nearing gender parity at these Olympics - but there is still a big disparity in football.

While the men's competition has 16 teams, there are only 12 women's sides competing in Paris.

"Football is still one of the sports we still have to work. The direction is set," said IOC director of corporate development and Sustainability Marie Sallois Dembreville.

"We are on a journey and we need to continue to work."

Leading wesley understands FIFA is pushing the IOC to allow the same number of men's and women's teams at Olympic Games.

Olympics trying to change filming bias

A number of steps were outlined this morning that the committee thinks move the games in the right direction - particularly regarding "filming bias".

Camera operators and directors are under orders to avoid sexist shots of women at Paris Olympics events, with IOC broadcasting chief Yiannis Exarchos particularly concerned about dwelling on close ups of female competitors.

He said: "Women are not there because they are more attractive - they are there because they are elite athletes."

Nadal to play despite injury worry

Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal will play in the men's singles today despite an injury worry after yesterday's doubles match - in which he partnered with Wimbledon champion and compatriot Carlos Alcaraz.

His right thigh was taped during their first-round victory, and Nadal said afterwards he hadn't decided whether to compete in singles.

"Tomorrow, I don't know what's going to happen," he said.

However, he went through a practice session this morning to test his fitness, then decided he would face Marton Fucsovics of Hungary this afternoon, according to his manager, Benito Perez-Barbadillo.

Organisers apologise for opening ceremony controversy

Organisers of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games have apologised to those offended by the opening ceremony, amid controversy surrounding an apparent drag queen re-enactment of the Last Supper painting.

The segment, which recreated the biblical scene of Jesus Christ and his apostles sharing a last meal before the crucifixion, featured drag queens, a transgender model and a naked singer made up as the Greek god of wine Dionysus - drawing dismay from the Catholic Church.

Sections of the crowd booed when a Dutch volleyball player who served time in prison for rape was introduced before his opening match in Paris this morning.

See our 11.20am post for more on that.

Triathlon training session cancelled due to poor water quality

As expected, the Olympics' triathlon swimming training session scheduled for today was cancelled due to water pollution in the Seine.

This comes after recent heavy rain in Paris affected pollution levels in the river, according to the organisers.

"The tests carried out in the Seine yesterday revealed water quality levels that in the view of the international federation, World Triathlon, did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow the event to be held," said Paris 2024.

More on that in our 9.05am post.
